Crafty Recycling

I just love projects which take something people would normally throw away and make something useful out of it. Here is one such example:

Plastic Bag Tote

What a great idea! Now I have something to look for at the junk store - an M crochet hook. I’m guessing it won’t be too hard to find around here. One problem for this project is we don’t get too many plastic bags because we almost always use canvas bags at the store. I wonder how many it takes to make it?

This reminds me of a show we watched last night on the BBC Channel - Dumped. They sent 11 people to live in a garbage dump for 3 weeks, where they learned to scavenge and make money from the trash, and also they built a pretty nice place to live with things they found. It’s amazing what gets thrown away in our society… not a sustainable way to live at all. Will we all learn we can’t just consume, consume, consume… before it’s too late? I hope so.

Hoppy Easter!!

My friend Jane sent this. Thanks, Jane!! :)

A man is driving along a highway and sees a rabbit jump out across the middle of the road. He swerves to avoid hitting it, but unfortunately the rabbit jumps right in front of the car.

The driver, a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulls over and gets out to see what has become of the rabbit. Much to his dismay, the rabbit is the Easter Bunny, and he is DEAD.

The driver feels so awful that he begins to cry. A beautiful blonde woman driving down the highway sees a man crying on the side of the road and pulls over. She steps out of the car and asks the man what’s wrong.

“I feel terrible,” ! he explains, “I accidentally hit the Easter Bunny with my car and KILLED HIM.”

The blonde says, “Don’t worry.”

She runs to her car and pulls out a spray can. She walks over to the limp, dead Easter Bunny, bends down, and sprays the contents onto him.

The Easter Bunny jumps up, waves its paw at the two of them and hops off down the road. Ten feet away he stops, turns around and waves again, he hops down the road another 10 feet, turns and waves, hops another ten feet, turns and waves, and repeats this again and again and again and again, until he hops out of sight.

The man is astonished. He runs over to the woman and demands, “What is in that can? What did you spray on the Easter Bunny ?”

The woman turns the can around so that the man can read the label.

It says..

(Are you ready for this?)

(Are you sure?)
(You know you’re gonna be sorry)

(Last chance)

(OK, here it is)

It says,

“Hair Spray
Restores life to dead hair,
and adds permanent wave.”

Happy Easter!!!

Destination: Denmark

The happiest people on the planet live in Denmark, according to this article on Gimundo. I would like to visit there… I wonder if it could be a side trip from Spain? Or maybe it deserves its own vacation. In any case, it looks like a wonderful place and if everybody is so happy, it must be a great place to visit. Here’s more info from WikiPedia.

Recycle, Reduce, Reuse

I really like recycling, and even more, repurposing. Here’s a great article about recycling:

How to Recycle Practically Anything

I would really like to make a business of repurposing… it’s my dream job. Maybe in a few years I’ll be able to work on that one.

Thai Room

Tonight we had a GREAT dinner at the Thai Room, a place out on Route 50 near Weeki Wachee. I got green curry beef and it was delicious!! We also had Curry Duck (delectable!), honey peanut chicken which was really good, Double Delight with shrimp and chicken (it was delightful), and a noodle dish with pork. Plus the soup was awesome - it came in lovely covered bowls. I got a coconut milk soup with lemongrass, lime and galanga root (I think that’s what it was). I definitely want to go back there. The owner (seen in the background of the picture) plied us with menus and business cards so we can spread the word. Unfortunately, just about everybody we know down here was with us. Who will we give the stuff to? Hmm… :)

Feeling Lucky and Thankful

The following poll results show just how well-off we are as a nation:

What are you giving up to pay for gas?

Total Votes: 118015
Eating out 35% 41411
Going to movies 8% 9636
Vacations 21% 25186
Nothing, not affecting me 35% 41782

They didn’t include all of the possibilities, though. How many people are scrimping on regular food because of gas prices? I’ll bet it’s a lot more than 42,000 people. My vote was for less going to the movies (the minority, of course) but I suppose I could have also voted with the majority of “it’s not affecting me.” And I read something the other day that said people tend to not give up vacations, which I can totally understand! So, how would you vote in the poll?

I Did a Baaaaaaaad Thing :(

Our shower got clogged with hair, so I bought some stuff to clear it out of the drain. We resorted to a chemical solution because we thought we couldn’t get into the drain without having to replace it (stupid design!!) and I bought this stuff called Liquid Lightning. I will never ever use that stuff again, knowing now what it can do to you. Ugh!!!! I feel so bad. I knew it was bad, but not how terrible it really is. I should not have and never will buy that again. Ever! (Insert Jamie Hyneman impression here.) :)

Seriously, though… I can’t understand how money trumps common sense when it comes to stuff like chemicals that we know are polluting our world in terrible ways yet we do nothing to stop it because the money is the first consideration - profit above all else. It’s sickening and I don’t think it will end until humans are wiped out by stupidity and laziness. What do you think?

Perfect End to a Perfect Day

The other day was just wonderful! One of the last things I did that day, which also helped make it great, was finish reading a book named “Project Everlasting“. I like this book so much I’m going to buy (or request) a copy. These two guys (Mathew Boggs and Jason Miller) went around the country talking to couples who had been married 40, 50 or more years, to find out the secrets to longevity in a relationship. It’s very easy to read, entertaining, heart-wrenching and above all, contains extremely good advice on making a marriage last. I’m lucky to already have with Trav a lot of the things mentioned in the book… we’re best friends, we respect each other, we understand that love may ebb and flow at different times but we always love each other and are committed to staying together!
