Happy Mother’s Day!!

It was great to talk with my mom on Mother’s Day. She sent me a recipe for Blueberry Cream Cheese Braid which looks totally yummy. Here’s her version - it looks beautiful and delicious. The picture at the end of the recipe does not look that good. I hope ours is as pretty and tasty as my Mom’s!!

I love you, Mom. Hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day. :)

Oh and I forgot to tell you… tomorrow I’m making Daily Bread from page 39 of Bread Machine Magic! Except I don’t have miller’s bran so I’ll have to use flax or something. I’m sure it will be delicious. Thanks again for the book!

Note to self: Green curry is much hotter!

We discovered tonight that red curry is milder than green curry. The other night we had red curry shrimp and it was delicious. Tonight we had green curry chicken, and I used the same amount of green curry paste as I did of red (the recipe was the same) and boy, was it HOT! A little too hot for us… next time I’ll use maybe a little more than half that amount.

While researching curry heat, I found this really cool kitchen gadget - I want it!!

Coconut Shredder

When making coconut milk, I wonder if it would be better to use the coconut water or just plain water? I suppose both would be needed to get enough milk for a recipe. I would definitely like to try making our own coconut milk, that would be very cool. I’ve recently discovered that fresh coconut is one of my favorite foods - probably in the top 10. Mmm!

Mmmmmm

Yesterday was a good day. I made Red Curry Shrimp for dinner (the recipe was on the side of the Thai Kitchen curry paste jar) and it turned out really well. Then we went over to see Gramma & Aunt Susie and ended up going for ice cream at the little 50s ice cream shop down the road. They have nice tables outside so we took our ice cream and went out there, and noticed it was low tide in the little canal that runs alongside the place. We saw hundreds of crabs in the mud, each standing at the entrance to its hole, intermittently waving its big claw. It was really neat! I think they were fiddler crabs. I studied them while I ate most of my ice cream, and then we went back to visit with Gramma for a while longer. They’re leaving for Michigan next week so we’re trying to cram in all of the visiting we can between now and then!

While looking up the crab info, I stumbled on this site - Pure Florida. It’s a very nice site. The crabs we saw, the holes were maybe 6″-8″ apart so they weren’t jam packed like the Pure Florida fiddler crab page.

Shoot ‘em up (or not)

There’s an interesting experiment taking place at the University of Chicago… they have a game which shows 120 different pictures of men in various city settings. Some have guns, some do not. The goals are to not shoot unarmed people (by pressing z on the keyboard), and to shoot people who have a gun (by pressing / on the keyboard). You have to decide quickly as the pictures flash by pretty fast. I won’t say what they’re looking to prove (so you don’t have a preconceived notion of what the result might be), but you can read more here and here after you’re done.

Stereotyping and Prejudice Research Laboratory - Shooter Game

My results:

Score: 540
Average reaction times:
Black armed: 713.16 ms
Black unarmed: 1596.96 ms
White armed: 740.52 ms
White unarmed: 821.08 ms

Here’s what Bleys got!

Score: 670
Average reaction times:
Black Armed: 592.36 ms
Black Unarmed: 772.2 ms
White Armed: 607.72 ms
White Unarmed: 727.96 ms

His times are amazingly fast. He plays a lot of games, though, so he’s kinda twitchy like that. ;)

If you try it, feel free to share your results here. What does it all mean? I don’t know yet… will continue to ponder.
