Neat Airfare Tool

Today I found a really cool site which will show the lowest airfares over a period of time, like a month. So if you have to go somewhere but the dates don’t particularly matter, this can be a good way to save some money!

Farecast Flexible Travel Search

Update: Trav & I compared some rates this morning - he used Orbitz - and this tool does NOT show the lowest rates. However, it’s still useful for picking dates which will be cheaper.

Scallop Season

We’re pretty close to some good spots for harvesting scallops from the Gulf of Mexico… I would like to try it once, to see how it turns out. Scallop season starts on Monday and continues through September. While looking at stuff, I found an interesting article:

Bay Scallops

It’s interesting that a scallop produces both eggs and sperm, and it has to release them at different times so it’s not breeding with itself! The Pure Florida blog has a post about scalloping in Florida, too. Maybe this is the year we’ll give it a try.

Tech Support Humor

My brother sent me this very, very funny video. If you’ve ever done any kind of tech support, you’ll be able to relate to this one!!

The Website is Down

Oh and this probably isn’t safe for work, depending on your workplace!! It’s a slow site but well worth the wait.

Interesting Breakfast

I tried a new breakfast today, after reading about how turmeric is very good for you. I took about half a cup of plain yogurt, added a good bit of turmeric (maybe 1/4 teaspoon?), a dash of onion powder and some salt and pepper. Mixed that all up and then added some veggies… super-thinly sliced carrot and celery, diced tomato, a little yellow bell pepper, a green onion and some parsley. It tasted delicious! I bet it would make a good salad dressing. I’m going to try and find some recipes where I can use it, like this one for Sesame Braised Chicken & Cabbage. Sounds yummy! Anyone have suggestions?

Turmeric

Every time I see the name of this delicious spice, I think of the Tumeroks on Asheron’s Call (a multiplayer D&D-type game Trav & I used to play). Tonight Bleys picked a pilaf recipe that turned out quite good, after we spiced it up a bit. He says pilaf is normally bland, so I can see why it’s not a dish I would remember.

Anyways, while we were cooking I was wondering about turmeric and found this page:

World’s Healthiest Foods: Turmeric

Apparently it’s really, really good for you. So I’m going to try a breakfast of plain yogurt mixed with turmeric, onion powder, salt and pepper. Then I’ll cut up and mix in whatever veggies I can find - probably carrots, celery, radishes, tomato? Should be interesting! I’ll let you know how it turns out.

P.E. Teacher?

Maybe one of my future jobs will be as a teacher of children… apparently our education system is a shambles. I’ve been reading a book by John Stossel, called Myths, Lies And Downright Stupidity and I’m in the education section right now; the chapter is titled “Stupid Schools”. It says the longer a child is in our school system, the worse s/he does on international scholastic tests. We need to do something to turn that around and maybe I can be part of the solution. Though I say PE teacher because I really would like to see more fitness from our young people, and better eating habits. Definitely better eating habits.

Earlier today I ate a very old Twinkie and it left a bad, fishy taste in my mouth. I wonder if they’ve always done that or was this one so very old it just tasted nasty. I don’t think I’ll be eating another Twinkie anytime soon. :0&

Smelly Shoes

Jester was a feral cat when we met her in South Carolina. Ever since she came inside to live with us, she just loves to lay on and sometimes hug our shoes… they must smell like the outdoors. She especially loves the shoe she’s laying on in the pic (one of my back yard shoes).

Flashback!

Today a movie from 1986 came on TV and they showed $.86 for a gallon of gas. We wondered if that was accurate, and a Google search revealed this result:

1980s Flashback

What a great site! I put in the year I was born and looked at all the stuff that happened - crazy. Gas was $.33 per gallon! I took the polls, too… you get to vote on the best song from each era. I enjoyed my little trip down memory lane. How ’bout you?  :)

Food, Glorious Food!

Creme BruleeLately I’ve been trying a lot of different recipes - every so often I get on a kick of wanting more variety. The first two dishes shown are the result of buying ramekins at the thrift store (there’s a really good one nearby that supports homeless cats). The first is Creme Brulee, yum! We had that for dessert on several of our cruises and when I found a recipe for it on the vanilla extract box, I thought maybe we could try making some. It turned out great! The next batch we made was chocolate, and it was even better. The next dessert in the ramekins will be souffles with chocolate sauce. :p~

Cheese SoufflesTo get our money’s worth, I wanted to be sure and use the ramekins for something else, so I made some cheese souffles for lunch the other day. I think I overfilled them because they came out all lopsided and terribly bumpy. To fix that, I bought more ramekins!! So next time, they won’t be so full, and I’ll add some bits of ham and onion to make them really tasty.

French Bread

Next up is my first loaf of French bread, made today from a recipe out of the bread machine recipe book my mom gave me. I made it to make bread crumbs (because I can’t find them without hydrogenated oil at the store) and it turned out really well! Bleys paid me a very nice compliment by saying it tasted like Carrabba’s bread. Yay!!! I might have to make another loaf for crumbs because this is all that was left after we were done sampling it. :)

Edible arrangementOur rainy season has finally started, so today Trav mowed the grass for the first time this year. My job is to move stuff out of the way and to go around and rid the yard of sand spurs before they get chopped up and strewn around by the mower. While hunting for the evil weeds, I found these beautiful and delicious greens! Sheep sorrel and yellow wood sorrel. As an experiment, I put them in water and left them on the island in our kitchen, so we can enjoy them before they become a tart and tasty addition to our next salad.

Has anybody else tried something interesting lately? Feel free to comment.
